Rollsigns from Markham, ON
This mylar front destination sign was originally designed for an Orion bus. Its
print date is June 2, 1982, and it has 35 exposures. Two exposures from the
original printing of the sign (shown below) were later removed, and the
remaining sections reattached. Its sign tag is shown here:
Transit it what was once Markham Township, began with the Toronto and York Radial Railway, which ran along Yonge Street,
the western boundary of Markham Township. A suburban service, known as Maple Leaf - Markham Coach Lines, operated until
the spring of 1929, when
Gray Coach Lines took over the service. Later, interurban streetcar service on Yonge Street was
replaced by the North Yonge bus, operated by the
Toronto Transportation Commission. In the fall of 1973, transit service in
Markham was awarded to Trailways of Canada Ltd., later Travelways. The modern Markham Transit was a contracted service
operated by Miller Paving, under Miller Transit Ltd. Generally, Markham Transit operated east-west routes in the town, while
north-south routes were covered by contracted services provided by the
Toronto Transit Commission and GO Transit.
On January 1, 2001 Markham Transit, along with
Vaughan Transit, Richmond Hill Transit and Newmarket Transit which
included the previously run
Aurora Transit service, merged to become what is now York Region Transit.

This mylar front destination sign is off 1979 OBI 01.501 Orion I
#2010. It has no print date (printed by Transign), and it has 33

letters. Ones that drop below the font line are raised, like the "p" in
"Special, seen below. Its sign tag is shown below the sign image.
