Rollsigns from Sarnia, ON
Transit in Sarnia began with the Sarnia Street Railway Company in 1875. This service ran until
February 25, 1931. After its closure, transit resumed on January 1, 1932 with the Sarnia Bus
Company Ltd. In the 1950's a company called Cities Bus Services Ltd. held down service until
Sarnia Transit Company Ltd., acquired by Charterways Transportation Ltd., took over in the
1960's. The modern Sarnia Transit began operations in 1974, and continues to this date.
This set of mylar rollsigns were given to me by
Sarnia Transit. They both have no printed date,
and each have 25 exposures. These were
printed before a system-wide change in 1992.
This set of mylar rollsigns were given to me by Sarnia Transit in mint condition;
not only had they never been in a bus, there was still liquid yellow dye on the sign!
The front sign (left) is dated April 16, 1991, while the side sign (right) is dated April
19, 1991. Each sign has 40 exposures. They were printed before the system-wide
changes that occured in 1992, but interestingly, were printed with the colours to be
used after the changes. Only two sets of these "transition" signs were ever printed.
Their respective sign tags are shown below.
This set of mylar rollsigns were given to me by Sarnia Transit. The
front sign (left) is off of 1991 built MCI TC40-102N "Classic" #911. Its
print date is March 31, 1992. Its sign tag is shown below. The side
sign is off of 1991 built MCI TC40-102N "Classic" #913. It has no
print date, but with the readings being identical to the front sign, it's
likely the print date is within a couple days of March 31, 1992. Both
signs have 46 exposures.
This mylar rollsign was given to me by Sarnia
Transit. It was pulled from their retired Ford
ELF #972. It has no printed date, and has 29
exposures. The image of this sign was drawn
virtually perfect to scale.

3-31-92 TRANSIGN
This mylar rollsign was given to me by Sarnia Transit. It was pulled from their retired 1992 built
OBI 05.501 Orion V #922. The sign is dated March 20, 1992 and has 29 exposures. It's very
likely this front sign was the only one to occupy this bus throughout its life. Interestingly, the sign
tag indicates it was designed for a Flxible 870 model bus, not the Orion V bus it was actually in.

3/20/92 TRANSIGN
Sarnia Transit's 1992 built Orion V buses #921 and #923, showing
jumbo front rollsigns from the same series as one above, are seen
retired at the back of the Sarnia Transit garage on September 18,
2009. Orion V #922 was also on this retirement line but was not in a
position to easily photograph from the front.
Retired Sarnia Transit Ford Econoline Low Floor (ELF)
#972, showing the rollsign seen above right, is seen
with other retired buses at the back of the Sarnia
Transit yard on September 18, 2009.
